Android N Beta Experience on Google Nexus 5X
So i grabbed a Google Nexus 5X 16GB recently from eBay for cheap to test out the upcoming major Android release - Android N. If you have 5X, 6P or Nexus 6, you can enroll to Android N Beta program ( check here ) and you will get an OTA update in a few minutes. This OTA update is around 1GB.
Performance since updating to Android N has been normal. It doesn't feel like using a Beta version at all. Almost all features i use works without any issues. I didn't experience any severe force close issues or hanging or reboots. Sometimes Settings app crashes - to be expected in Beta test build.
Some apps in the Play Store can't be installed as they don't yet support Android N. However, if you can side load them, they should work. I tested with Sony Play Memories Mobile app and it worked flawlessly.
The first thing you would notice is the Notification Drawer has changed. Every notification is now White and has the App icon on the right to indicate which app is sending this notification. There is also now more information available.
Similar styling can be seen in the Settings App as well. Now we have a White settings which has more information listed in smaller texts under each Item. For example under Apps you can see how many apps installed, under Storage you can see how much GB is used etc. You no longer need to dive into those individual menus to see these details.
How to Enable Split Screen Swipe Up Gesture ? If you long press the Setting Icon on the top of the Notification bar, you would get a hidden menu "System UI Tuner" in Settings. It has some extra useful options. You can customize your status bar icons and also enable "Do Not Disturb" option when pressing the volume buttons there. Swipe Up gesture is available under "Other" in this hidden menu.
Overall, the Android N experience on the Nexus 5X has been nice. Google will release another Beta build before releasing the final edition of the Android N ( Nutella ? or Neyyappam? ).
